Is Pediasure good for your kids ? – Yes or no.

For Mothers who have picky eaters at hand, you might tempted to get one of the easily available nutrition drink like pediasure to ensure your kid is getting all the nutrition they need. Pediasure may have all the nutritions and vitamins the label says it has. What  raises our concern are the  top two ingredients on the list is WATER and SUGAR, While water content shouldn’t matter, sugar content can be worrisome.

Why Pediasure may not be ideal for your kids?

Pediasure’s top ingredient is sugar. sugar in foods can be a great source of energy.However replacing it with kids meals may not be a great idea as kids get more drawn to sugary drinks. This in the long term might aid in not eating wholsome nutritous meals. Few mothers have also noticed kids appetite reducing when on Pediasure for long time.

Accroding to  AHA ,children and teens (ages 2–18) should limit their added sugars to less than 6 teaspoons per day and no more than 8 fl oz of sugary beverages per week. The vanilla flavor of pediasure  has 18 grams of sugar, that’s 4 ½ teaspoons of sugar in only 8 oz ., “Chocolate Shake” flavor contains 23 grams of sugar (nearly six teaspoons of sugar) in one 80z bottle. So you do the math !!

When can we give Pediasure?

That being said, the drink still contains nutrition and it may be ok to give it to your child as treat vs everyday meal. It can be good source of energy when travelling or your kid is on hunger strike for whole day. Always talk to your pediatrician before you start giving Pediasure for kids.

This is what Abbott, the company who make pediasure has to say ” Pediasure  is a good source of protein, and 25 vitamins and minerals, for children up to 13 years of age. If you’re thinking of starting your little one on PediaSure and he or she is younger than 2 years old, be sure to check with your doctor first.
